Madden is hit and miss for me. For every astute comment he makes, he follows it up with a babbling dialogue seemingly designed to ensure that there is no silence on the airwaves during one of his games. He gets paid to give his opinions, which, unfortunately, he gives, even when he has nothing to say.
I still like broadcasters like Vin Scully, who know when to shut up. If you ever see the re-broadcast of Gibson's 1988 World Series homer, notice how effective it was when Scully shut up for a few minutes and let the situation speak for itself as Gibby rounded the bases. I can't picture Madden doing that.
